Misrepresentation is a very serious issue through out world history that can determine the existence of an individual or even a whole race. Hitler did all his best to wipe out a whole race from Germany and as Stalin tried doing in Russia.
Our account on Paul here took place 57/58-60 AD(Circa). This happened after Paul’s three missionary journeys.
According to Professor Hendriksen “In order to satisfy the jewish Christians Paul consented to join four men who were performing a Nazarite vow in the temple. In agreeing to do this the Apostle was not inconsistent; for, while he always insisted that no Gentiles should keep the ceremonial law and also that no Jew was under any obligation to observe it, he never found fault with Jews who wanted to observe it, of their own accord, as long as they did not do so in the expectation that this would in any way help them to be saved. But certain non-Christian Jews from Asia saw Paul in the Temple and falsely accused him of having defiled the holy Place by bringing Greeks into it. Acts 21:27-40. A riot ensued in which the Chief Captain intervened to save the life of Paul. But it didn’t stop there, instead, the Chief Captain labeled Paul a criminal, an Egyptian murderer that led four thousand men into the wilderness.
What do you do when the very person that wanted to assist you suddenly turns out trying to implicate you with a very serious and scandalous libel? Let’s see what Paul did in his own case: Acts 21:39
“But Paul said, I am a man which am a Jew of Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, a citizen of no mean city: and, I beseech thee, suffer me to speak unto the people.”
1. Paul confronted the Chief Captain through a dialogue.
2. Paul asserted his gender, age-group and masculinity. In other words, he defined his responsibility. By being a man he meant he’s above 18 and nobody can push lies down his throat.
3. He identified himself with a tribe and a people-group, “A Jew of Tarsus.”
4. He emphasized his locality “A city in Cilicia”
5. He prided in his citizenship, “A citizen of no mean city”
6. He persuaded the Chief Captain to allow him speak to the people.
7. His audience was beyond the Chief Captain. He wanted to communicate with the crowd.
8. After the Chief Captain allowed him to address the crowd, Paul stood on an advantageous and strategic position to be seen by all. Attention! Let everybody see you.
9. Paul stood by the steps. Use tools that will make you visible to more audience.
10. Paul spoke to them in Hebrew, use languages people understand to authenticate yourself. Don’t use languages that will confuse you and the audience. Remember, somebody is trying to tell the people who you are not. It’s up to you to seize every opportunity to say who you are. Use the landmarks the people can identify you with. In my own case some once said that I joined ministry to make money. I confronted him through a dialogue. A man who’s barely sane wanted to embarrass me in public and I put him where he belonged, I shouted him down. When you don’t engage people in a dialogue they’ll ridicule you and associate your identity with rogues and charlatans.
11. Don’t leave the explanation of your destiny to anyone. Not even your image maker. The whole wide world wants you to say something about yourself. You owe the world an explanation.
Paul had his destiny and identity in his hands, feet and mouth. He dialogued with mouth, stood on his feet, beckoned with his hands and dialogued with his mouth. A “dumb” minister is no good to a sarcastic community. A dumb Church is a dead-end in a community that is mischievous.
Declare that you might be justified, talk, keep talking, and talk some more, use every avenue to talk, create avenues to talk. Talk until you drop. If you are not talking, somebody will talk you out of ministry, business and will use your identity like a tissue paper.
The chief Captain is a man in authority, whatever he says will be taken seriously. It took Paul talking himself out of the Chief Captains mischief.
Look around you! As much as somebody is promoting you, someone else is using his/her mouth to tear your personality to ruin. Don’t’ just sit there mourning your situation, stand on your feet, beckon with your hands and speak all the wonderful testimonies that God Almighty has blessed you with.
If you don’t say something about your identity, you’ll be scourged. Paul narrowly escaped scourging. Use all entreaty to defend your cause.
Paul used the Roman law against the Centurion by asking, “Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman and un-condemned?
The Chief Captain bought his citizenship while Pau was a citizen by birth, according to him, he was a “free born.”
Paul suffered so many assaults. But you don’t need to .
At first instance, don’t go where God has given you a prior information that you won’t be safe. In the case of Paul, Agabus the prophet had earlier prophesied through the Holy Spirit that the owner of this girdle shall be bound in Jerusalem as illustrated by him at Caesaria (Acts 21:8-14). This came after an earlier warning by the Holy Spirit through some disciples at Tyre (Acts 21:3-4). But Paul insisted to go to Jerusalem. Hence, all this brouhaha, but in everything you do learn to talk, talk and talk. Paul later said the some Jewish leaders, “…because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.”Acts 28:20b.
Paul in the midst of all these was able to later understand his mandate thoroughly. “Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.” Acts 28:28.
Whatever God calls you to do let it be according to the will of God; and let it be followed accordingly by executive declarations by you.
