"While preserving unity in essentials, let everyone in the Church, according to the office entrusted to him, preserve a proper freedom in the various forms of spiritual life and discipline, in the variety of liturgical rites, and even in the theological elaborations of revealed truth. In all things let charity prevail. If they are true to this course of

action, they will be giving ever richer expression to the authentic catholicity and0 apostolicity of the Church." Vatican 2, Decree on Ecumenism page 458.4

" On the other hand, Catholics must gladly acknowledge and esteem the truly Christian endowments for our common heritage which are to be found among our separated brethren. It is right and salutary to recognize the riches of Christ and virtuous works in the lives of others who are bearing witness to Christ, sometimes even to the shedding of their blood. For God is always wonderful in His works and worthy of all praise. Nor should we forget that anything wrought by the grace of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of our separated brethren can contribute to our own edification. Whatever is truly Christian is never contrary to what genuinely belongs to the faith; indeed, it can always bring a more perfect realization of the very mystery of Christ and the Church." – Vatican 2, Decree on Ecumenism.

Quotes

So you will find that children have their instincts, and discover very speedily who is their friend, and depend upon it the children’s friend is one who will be worth knowing. Have a good word to say to each and every member of the family- the big boys, and the young ladies, and the little girls and everybody. No one knows what a smile and a hearty sentence will do. A man who is to do much with men must love them, and feel at home with them. An individual who has no geniality about him had better be an undertaker, and bury the dead, for he will never succeed in influencing the living. - C. H. Spurgeon

Success with youngsters here seems to depend upon a varying and flexible approach. Perhaps the key to this is feeling free of any formula which lays down how things must be done. Instead we pray that the Holy Spirit will show us His plan for a particular group at a particular time. – Rev. David Sheppard

‘ Our ministry demands mind. I shall not insist upon ‘the enlightenment of the age’ , still it is quite certain that there is a great educational advance among all classes, and that there will yet be much more of it. The time is passed when ungrammatical speech will suffice for a preacher. Even in a country, where, according to tradition, "nobody knows nothing," the school master is now abroad, and want of education will hinder usefulness."

  • C.H. Spurgeon

" There are those whose knowledge of scriptures is exceedingly meager. There are others who have a rather detailed knowledge of this or that story, book, or chapter of the Bible. Yet, they do not know the Bible as a whole: they have never made a systematic study of the Holy Book." – William Hendriksen, Professor of New Testament Literature Calvary Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

"I… suggest that this masterpiece on soul winning should be a textbook in every Christian College and Seminary in America. It is a must for pastors, evangelists, college people, Sunday school teachers and any sincere Christian who wishes to increase his or her soul-winning effectiveness." – Dr. Tom Malone, commenting on one of our Courses on Personal soul-winning by John R. Rice

**********************************************************************

" Study the Bible, dear brethren, through and through, with all helps that you can possibly obtain: remember that the appliances now within the reach of ordinary Christians are much more extensive than they were in our father’s days, and therefore you must be greater Biblical scholars if you would keep in front of your hearers. Intermeddle with all knowledge, but above all things meditate day and night in the law of the Lord." – C. H. Spurgeon

"A train is said to have been stopped on one of the United States’ railways by flies in the grease-boxes of the Carriage wheels. The analogy is perfect; a man in all other respects fitted to be useful, may by some small defect be exceedingly hindered, or even rendered utterly useless." –Anon

"Be well instructed in theology, and do not regard the sneers of those who rail at it because they are ignorant of it. Many preachers are not theologians, and hence the mistakes which they make. It cannot do any hurt to the most lively evangelist to be also a sound theologian, and it may often be the means of saving him from gross blunders." –C.H. Spurgeon

Christian Ministry as a Career

Entry Qualifications: 3 O-levels or 2 A-Levels. Provisions for those who lack these qualifications, especially mature entrants, but must show evidence of ability to undertake academic study through life experience.

The Work: (Ordained Ministry): Many duties are common to all denominations and include; holding services, preaching, conducting marriages and funerals. Less formal but equally important is ‘Pastoral care’, such as visiting the sick, comforting the bereaved and helping individuals with their religious and personal problems. Like family doctors, Priests receive many confidences and try to help their parishioners to come to terms with their weaknesses and circumstances.

Rabbis in addition play a large social and sometimes political role in their communities.

Traditionally, ministers have been appointed to one congregation. Nowadays many work in team ministries, particularly in inner cities, within which individuals may specialize, e.g. in youth-and-community work. Many serve as hospital Chaplains and some are responsible for the administration of schools. Others become Chaplains in colleges, the forces, industry, prisons.

Lay Ministry: Many churches train and employ lay workers, both stipendiary and non-stipendiary(paid and unpaid). They assist ordained ministers in services and pastoral work and may also be responsible for particular branches of ministry, such as teaching or counseling.

Prospects: Reasonable, those in Religious ministry are highly respected, but never very well-paid. Some senior posts exist in all churches, both spiritual and administrative.

Training: All candidates have to go through a rigorous selection process to access their ‘calling’ and suitability. Training is followed by a probationary period and does not lead automatically to ordination.

  • Those not wishing to be Rabbis can be ordained as Reverend following the training.

Personal attributes: Total sense of vocation and conviction that no other kind of work will give personal satisfaction. Desire to share faith with others; good intellect; ability to relate to all members of the Church however well or poorly educated. Good health and stamina, mental and physical; open-mindedness and genuine desire to serve others without discrimination, willingness to be continually ‘available’; self-discipline and self-sufficiency-although at the center of the church ministers are always slightly ‘set apart’. Emotional stability. Ability to work on own and as part of a team. Administrative skills.

Women: The status of women varies widely between denominations.
